First Look at the Trail
How I became acquainted with the Rachel Carson Trail - by Don Erdeljac
Early summer of 1997 found me participating in my first Pittsburgh Marathon. While still recovering from the event (after running 26.2 miles, something is going to hurt), a friend with People Who Run Downtown told me about the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge: "34 miles cross-country, hard to follow, use a map, cross creeks and marshy areas, thorns, weeds - you will love it!" After speaking with Leo Stember, I hiked my first section of the trail, beginning someplace out in Hampton and hiking back to North Park. My first reaction was: "This is a great resource, so close and easy to access". I completed the Challenge that year and three more to follow. Then I went on to Field Manage the Challenge in 2002 and 2003. There is nothing like the thrill of accomplishment!
