Challenge advance registration closes tomorrow!

The deadline for advance registration is tomorrow

Wedneday, June 20 is the last day to register in advance for the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. See the Challenge 2007 page for a link to the active.com registration site. After tomorrow, you may only register on-site at the Beaver Shelter in North park, beginning at 5 AM on June 23 and the fee will be $75 cash or check (no credit cards).

The 34-mile event is very close to selling out. If that happens, your only option is to wait on standby Saturday morning until we start re-issuing the slots of the no-shows.

If you plan to register on-site for the Family Challenge, you will need to do this at North Park (even though the hike begins in Emmerling Park) between 6 AM and 7 AM. The on-site fee is $85 for up to 5 family members, cash or check only.

NCT: Bear Creek Bridge Installed

Conservancy volunteers help the North Country Trail

I was amazed at the volunteer effort from everyone the weekend of April 21 on the Bear Creek Bridge project! A 48-foot arched bridge was erected on the North Country Trail in Parker, PA. People came from far and wide including many from the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy, a North Country Trail affiliate organization. About thirty people worked on the project over the two days and it went very smoothly. Everyone, including the kids, just kept going no matter how tired we were from carrying all the lumber, scaffolding and tools the better part of a mile in and then down a steep slope to the work site. The project was extremely well managed thanks to Dan, Peggy, and Jesse Maurer and all those who helped with the building and preparation of the bridge. The documenting of the volunteer work hours 'banked' $4,600 toward future matching DCNR grant money. Congratulations and THANK YOU to everyone who helped with this project!

Free Amateur Radio Instruction

Sign up to be a licensed amateur radio operator!

The SkyVew Radio Society is offering free classroom instruction to obtain a Technician-level Ham radio license. These are the folks that provide critical communications during our events. The one-day class will take place on an upcoming Saturday or Sunday. Course materials cost $30, and the fee for the license exam is $14. New radio gear is available for under $200. If you're interested, email info@rachelcarsontrails.org and I'll let you know when and where!

Free Amateur Radio Instruction

We're looking for more licensed amateur radio operators

The SkyVew Radio Society is offering free classroom instruction to obtain a Technician-level Ham radio license. These are the folks who provide critical communications during our events. We need more of our volunteers to be licensed in order to ensure we have coverage in case of scheduling conflicts. Because this is important to us, the Conservancy will pay for your course materials and the test fee, so there will be no cost to you. If you'd like to become licensed, please email info@rachelcarsontrails.org.
