by Don Erdeljac last modified Jun 21, 2006 12:45 PM

Challenge reference locations, miles and elapsed time at 2.3 mph (minimum slowest time to complete the Challenge)

Challenge reference locations, miles and elapsed time at 2.3 mph (minimum slowest time to complete the Challenge) The distance is 34.6 miles and 15:04 is given to complete the hike. Starting earlier doesn't give more time to 'officially' complete the Challenge; however it will yield more daylight hours and possibly a cooler start.

Sun data for
24 June 2006 Eastern Daylight Time

Begin civil twilight 5:17 a.m.
Sunrise 5:50 a.m.
Sun transit 1:22 p.m.
Sunset 8:54 p.m.
End civil twilight 9:27 p.m.

If you walked at your same walking pace as some of us did on a 21.7 mile long training hike, you would be walking at 2.48 MPH and it would take 34.66(mi)/2.48(mph)= 13:59 hours to complete the distance. Given 15:04 to officially finish, that would allow 65 minutes of 'rest' time. You could stop for 10 minutes at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 miles. If you 'skip' one of the breaks, you would then 'build up' time and have a 20 minute break possible!
